When it comes to free and open source, which is to say, when it comes to free speech and collaboration, then I am a firm believer that it will continue its march toward becoming the dominant mode for software development.
This is a political and religious belief. (as if those were separate in this day and age)
The story of C and Unix are the same story.
The story of Java is not.
But, the story of Clojure and Javascript certainly are.
Riddle yourself: Why is there only one implementation of the JVM that matters? Can one person feasibly bootstrap your programming environment from scratch?
These questions matter. Complexity matters.
