CPUs got too fast. Storage got too large.

PCs stopped competing on specifications long ago. Laptops stopped competing on anything but display quality and battery longevity. (Two things that don’t matter for PCs.) The release of the Moto G means mobiles are right behind laptops.

Unless I’m all wrong and viewing the issue backward.

More mobiles are made than laptops are made than PCs. Perhaps the larger ecosystem and harsher competition means a higher rate of speciation? If so, then I expect $200 to remain that magic price point for a long time in much the same way as $2000 was the magic price point for PCs.
